high performance networking

by rob rothfarb last modified 2007-09-29 17:30
High performance data communications networks are in use by educational and research institutions and organizations. What are they? Who has access to them? How are they accessed? What are people doing with them? What kind of learning scenarios are possible through their use?

Most people are familiar with the high speed data networks universities, colleges, research institutions, and many private companies have access to.  The commodity internet grew out of initial research into data communications and networking.  We often take high speed access to the internet for granted.  While widespread broadband internet access continues to grow, a parallel set of overlaid, high speed, access restricted networks is also growing and many of the educational institutions, including museums, now have access to them.

One of these networks, Internet2, has a certain cache, yet remains largely untapped as a targeted content delivery platform.  This topic is being organized to discuss the potential and practical issues of designing and delivery content via networks such as Internet2 to the schools, museums, and other institutions that are connected to it and other high performance networks.

Exploratorium Internet2 Gateway

The Exploratorium's portal site to web resources it has developed which are offered in high-resolution, broadband-enhanced versions for schools and museums connected to Internet2.

The Research Channel

Webcast video community site with links to broadband video resources, webcasts, multicast video, etc from researchers in different domains.
