Website for an exhibition on mapping both physical and abstract informational spaces. Includes an online map gallery showing different ways of visualizing science and scientific information.

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science is a traveling exhibition "to demonstrate the power of maps to understand, navigate, and manage not only physical places, but also abstract informational spaces." The online gallery is devided into Cartographic Maps, Concept Maps, and Domain Maps. The gallery currently holds 86 maps, and is a great source of inspiration for developing different types of science visualizations. Highlights include "2000 Structure of Science", which maps the relationship between published scientific papers; "Emergent Mosaic of Wikipedian Activity", which shows the frequency with with topics are revised; "Internet Splat Map", which maps network connectivity; and "WORLDPROCESSOR: Zones of Invention - Patterns of Patents", which is a globe showing the geographic location of patent awardees. Some of the entries provide details about  the data source, analysis techniques, and spatial layout techniques used to create the map.
