Google Earth Outreach

Google service for building location-based educational multimedia stories for Google Earth.

Google Earth Outreach is a free service from Google for building location-based multimedia stories and presentations to educate others about your non-profit work. The presentations become downloadable KML files (or KMZ files which are zipped packages for better downloading) that can be loaded into the Google Earth desktop application. Presentations appear in Google Earth on high resolution satellite images, and take the form of virtual interactive fly-overs, with clickable markers indicating points of information. Clicking on a marker brings up a content bubble presenting the information and media about that location. Markers can be customized with icons to indicate the type of information or media that will be presented. Maps can be marked up with paths and shapes to illustrate regional data, and all of the content can be organized into different layers users can navigate through and composite. Projects can also include sidebars presenting non-geo-located information such as overviews, general data, map keys, and resource links.

Google provides Tutorials, Case Studies, a Showcase, and a Help Section.

The Showcase Section features recent projects developed with Earth Outreach, organized by mission area: Current Affairs, Education & Culture, Environment & Science, Global Development, Public Health, and Social Services.

Case Studies include, among others,  "Atlas of Our Changing Environment" by the United Nations Environment Program, "Crisis in Darfur" by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, "Appalachian Mountaintop Removal " by Appalachian Voices, and "Alaska National Wildlife Refuge" by the Sierra Club.

The Tutorials include Starter Templates, including "Creating KML From a Spreadsheet", and "Adding Time as a Fourth Dimension"; User Experience design advice, Content Distrubution how-to's, including "Packaging Content in a KMZ file", and "Promoting Your KML", and Advanced Topics. The Tutorials Section also provides links to the Google Earth User Guide, and KML Reference.

The Help section provides links to the Google Earth Help Center, the Google EArth User Guide, the Earth Outreach Discussion Group, and the KML Reference and Discussion Group.

Google also offers a grant program to non-profits for the Google Earth Pro development application with advanced authoring features.
